“The dielectric response of water and electrolytes at high and low frequencies”
The response of water and electrolytes to oscillating electric fields shows a series of different adsorption peaks. The exact location and amplitude of the peaks serve as a sensitive probe into the dynamics of the hydrogen bond network, as well as into the ion-water and ion-ion interactions in the electrolyte. We combine classical and ab initio simulations with dielectric and Raman spectroscopy experiments to study the response of electrolytes from the MHz to the 100 THz regime. Using simple analytical approximations, we show how the hydrogen bond dynamics, the ion-water interactions, and the configuration of ion pairs affect the electrolyte dielectric response for a large number of different electrolytes.
