New at the Institute: Sandro Kuppel

April 12, 2024

Hello everyone,

my name is Sandro, I am 24 years old, and I recently joined the ICP team to do my master's thesis. In my free time, I like to engage in various sports activities such as bouldering, mountain biking, and calisthenics.
My thesis focuses on the recent breakthroughs in polymer sequencing utilizing biological nanopores. These breakthroughs have led to the creation of the "nanodiagBW" cluster, with the overall goal of developing analysis systems based on nanopore technology capable of classifying post-translational modifications of proteins. In my research, I aim to analyze the experimental data by using transformer models to classify different peptides. Transformers were initially developed for natural language processing tasks and have served as the foundation for groundbreaking models like BERT and GPT. Since then, they have also been applied to image processing, classification, and audio processing tasks, matching other state-of-the-art neural networks. We hope that they can also be applied to our problem in order to potentially lead to more accurate and robust classification results.
