SUMMARY:Bachelor's Defense of Rebecca Stephan
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca was working on "Studying the nanoparticle-polymer interaction in magnetic gels using computer simulations" supervised by Rudolf Weeber. We congratulate her on this wonderful achievement and invite you to attend the defense.\nAbstract: Magnetic gels, consisting of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) embedded in a hydrogel, are stimuli-responsive as their shape and elasticity can be controlled by magnetic fields. The coupling between the MNPs’ rotation and the polymers directly influences the gel’s magnetic and viscoelastic behaviour. Experimentally, this is probed by measuring the AC susceptibility. In this work, we study different hydrodynamic and direct MNP-polymer couplings in a coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Hydrodynamic coupling produces a shift in the susceptibility spectra increasing with the polymer concentration surrounding the MNP. Direct coupling leads to a significantly larger shift and a reduced initial susceptibility in the spectrum, accompanied by hysteretic magnetization behaviour. In both cases, the susceptibility follows the same shape as derived using the Debye model.\nBest of luck Rebecca on your upcoming defense and future endeavors!
