It is now 2026 and the research software community is still working on establishing and growing Research Software Engineering (RSEng) as a domain in its own right. In this workshop report, we collected community feedback and documented recent initiatives that will strengthen RSEng, from IT infrastructure funding to RSEng associations at the national and regional scales, and from central RSEng units to software engineering curricula at universities. Together, these developments help us envision what RSEng could look like in 2035 and how the RSEng role will evolve to support the next generation of scientists.
