"Stimuli-responsive formation of bijels stabilized by magnetic ellipsoidal particles"
Abstract:
Bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels offer a versatile platform for emulsion templating of functional porous materials, including membranes, electrodes, and tissue-mimetic biomaterials. Control over the domain size and structure is highly desirable in these applications. Magnetic ellipsoidal particles offer a way to control the collective orientation of particles and thereby modulate capillary interactions. We use lattice Boltzmann simulations of the formation of bijels stabilized by magnetic ellipsoidal particles to show that particle alignment leads to anisotropic domain size and tortuosity of the bicontinuous morphology. Analysis of the simulation data reveals that the alignment facilitates enhanced packing and leads to different jamming times in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the field. Topological data analysis further reveals that the number of channels decreases following a power law, independent of particle shape and magnetic field strength. These quantitative insights into the dynamic coarsening of emulsion morphology can guide the development
of magnetically responsive emulsion systems.
