Simulation of rarefied gas flows using the Lattice Boltzmann method and Molecular dynamics simulation

Abstract:
The capability of the Lattice Boltzmann method to simulate rarefied gas flows for which the Knudsen-number is the characteristic dimensionless number is investigated. Recently developed modifications to the Lattice Boltzmann method enable it to solve the described problem, which is illustrated with several test cases. To simulate the diffuse spreading of a second component in the described flows a hybrid approach is proposed and tested combining the Lattice Boltzmann method with simplified Molecular Dynamics simulations.
